NOTSTOCK to Help Minot Family

In June, 2011, Minot, North Dakota experienced a devastating flood. Over 4,000 homes were affected; 80% of them had severe damage.

In the midst of this disaster and recovery, a few kids did their part through their art and the help of their teachers to raise money for a family with kids who was impacted by the flood. NOTSTOCK guest artist, Dave DeVries, asked area elementary students to draw a picture of a "beaver rebuilding Minot" or a "Monster Beaver," as MSU's mascot is the beaver.

Over 100 students submitted drawings. Dave selected three of them. One drawing was used to paint a "Monster Beaver" like in DeVries' book, The Monster Engine. The "Minot" text from another drawing was added to the painting. DeVries turned the third drawing into a pen-and-ink drawing that was screen printed onto T-shirts and other apparel at NOTSTOCK.

Now the "Monster Beaver" painting and "beaver rebuilding Minot" drawing are up for auction on eBay from November 2-12. All proceeds will be donated to a Minot family with six children devastated by this summer's flood.

DWITT returned to NOTSTOCK to make a new print for his Last Word Series, a series of prints based on the last words figures of note throughout human history have uttered as living human beings. For some reason I don't have many pictures of all the great bands and musicians who played at NOTSTOCK this year, but that doesn't mean those who played weren't loved and appreciated. Zine Workshops and More with Chloe Eudaly

Chloe Eudaly, owner of Reading Frenzy in Portland, Oregon, held two zine workshops during NOTSTOCK. Chloe also shared a variety of zines with guests. FANTASTIC EXHIBIT

The North Dakota Museum of Art was kind enough to allow MSU to host the Fantastic exhibit during NOTSTOCK. The exhibit will be in the Missouri Room on the third floor of the Student Center October 6-8 and October 10 from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the Minot State University campus. A tandem reception for Eudaly and the Fantastic exhibit will follow Eudaly’s 7 p.m. presentation on October 6 on the third floor of the Student Center.

Fantastic brings together of the work of a dozen artists from the United States, Canada, England, Iceland, and Argentina who delve into the implausible, incredible, and improbable. It is as though the artists provide the viewer with the characters and the setting, but require that the viewer supply the narrative. Many works echo earlier paintings. Argentinean artist Rez borrows from Da Vinci and Velázquez. David Becker of Detroit seems steeped in Bosch and Bruegel. Grand Forks’ Brian Paulsen keeps company with Edward Hopper and Franz Kline. For example, the beautiful woman holding an ermine in Da Vinci’s 1490 painting now holds a pig’s head in Rez’s 2009 version. Gay, colorful, and downright weird, the exhibition poses as a collection of old masterpieces and rollicking excursion into fun.

Lions and Tigers and (Monster) Beavers...Oh My!

Okay, lions and tigers won't really be at NOTSTOCK , but Dave DeVries will be painting a "Monster Beaver," and you can screen print an area child's drawing of a "beaver rebuilding Minot" onto a T-shirt or other apparel.

To explain, area elementary students were invited to draw a "Monster Beaver" or a "beaver rebuilding Minot." DeVries will select one of each of these drawings and transform the children's art into a drawing and painting. One child's "monster beaver" drawing will become a painting that will be executed directly at MSU and then sold at auction afterwards (a la his book, The Monster Engine). The sale will be donated to a deserving family who has been affected by the flood disaster. One child's drawing of a "beaver rebuilding Minot" will become a pen and ink drawing that can be screen printed onto shirts and apparel at the event for a freewill donation to also go to the deserving family.

Dave Devries will be working in the Student Center Beaver Dam all three days and will give presentations of his work, including his work for Marvel and DC Comics, on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. and Friday, Oct. 7 at 9 a.m. in Aleshire Theatre, Hartnett Hall.

Introducing Chloe Eudaly!

Since this year's theme is words and pictures, we needed a guest who knows something about both. Our search led us to Chloe Eudaly, a bookseller, publisher, writer, self-publishing educator and print devotee. She is the owner of Portland's legendary store, Reading Frenzy--a small, specialty bookshop/gallery/event space in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1994, Reading Frenzy is an independent press emporium devoted to supporting independent/alternative media and culture.

In 2004 Eudaly launched a small publishing venture, Show & Tell Press, and has been publishing Crap Hound for her friend Sean Tejaratchi ever since. She also co-founded the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC), a studio and workshop space, in the late 1990s, in response to the enthusiasm and interest her customers had for zines and self-publishing. This unique organization maintains the largest small press lending library in North America, as well as an art gallery, computer lab, production room, and letterpress print shop.

While at NOTSTOCK, Chloe will lead two zine workshops from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 6 & 7 in the Student Center Conference Center. She will also give the presentation, Print(ed) Matters at 7 p.m. on October 6 in the Student Center Conference Center followed by a reception. DWITT (Dave Witt) makes his home in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. He describes himself as, "A veteran of the comic book, rock poster, gallery, bookstore, and even gaming worlds, DWITT might just be the most ubiquitous artist whose name you’ve never learned… until now." His background in so many art forms that combine words and pictures make him the perfect guest for this year's event.

Back for a second time (DWITT was our guest in 2008 as well), DWITT will be screen printing (and maybe drawing) October 6-8, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Beaver Dam in the Student Center on the Minot State University campus. He will also give a presentation of his work at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 6 and again at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 7 in Aleshire Theatre, Hartnett Hall. Dave DeVries is an award winning illustrator with 20 years of experience visualizing high impact, high drama images.

Some of his illustration clients include Dreamworks SKG, Lucasfilm, Universal Studios, Sega, The 3DO company, Seed Studio, ASCAP, Tor Books and Marvel and DC Comics among others. If you've ever been on the Mummy Returns ride at Universal Studios Theme Park (Florida and California) then chances are you've seen his work. Much of it was featured in the ride itself. For the last two years Dave was a contractor for Seed Studio, a Taiwanese video game company heading up their "Seed Studio West" division as an Art Director, Illustrator and Promotions Manager. He currently freelances within the advertising and gaming industry.

Each year I introduce the NOTSTOCK guests by posting a few images of their work and telling you a little bit about them.

The first guest I'd like to introduce for this year's event is Landland.

Landland are the dynamic duo, Dan Black and Jes Seamans. They make gorgeous crazy awesome posters, art prints, CD/vinyl packaging, and other illustration and design work. They will screen print October 6-8, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Beaver Dam in the Student Center on the Minot State University campus. Their work will be displayed in the Northwest Art Center, 2nd floor of Hartnett Hall at MSU, and at 62 Doors Gallery & Studios, downtown Minot. Dan and Jes will also give a presentation of their work at 8 p.m. at 62 Doors during the NOTSTOCK closing reception.

Sonnenzimmer & The Little Friends of Printmaking at NOTSTOCK

Sonnenzimmer (Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi) and The Little Friends of Printmaking (LFOP) (Melissa and James Buchanan) demonstrated their screen printing skills at this year's NOTSTOCK. They each made an art print and together made a gigposter for Dosh's show (see earlier post). Artists from 62 Doors Gallery & Studios and MSU students worked the T-shirt printing stations and helped make everything happen. High school students from the area came to campus and participated in the events. Everyone got to print on tees, hoodies, and other items. We made new friends, connected to old ones, and are grateful for the artists' generosity, hard work, kindness, talent, passion, and sense of humor. Thanks everyone for another successful NOTSTOCK!

Dosh blows everyone away!

Martin Dosh was the featured music performance at NOTSTOCK. He played an amazing set in Aleshire Theatre with It's a Secret and Atom's Rite. He also conducted a workshop in the MSU Beaver Dam to explain what he does. He let people play on his equipment and join him on stage. And some of us took him out for some fun at the Barley Pop. Big Poppa E coming to NOTSTOCK!

Big Poppa E is a three-time HBO Def Poetry veteran and National Poetry Slam champion. His live performances combine poetry, stand-up comedy, and dramatic monologue into high-energy rants that skewer pop culture, politics, and the pain and beauty of relationships. BPE's work covers areas of gender, sexuality, and masculinity with a playful irreverence, and this focus has led to a growing following among students.

Come check out Big Poppa E's NOTSTOCK performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 7th in Aleshire Theatre in Harnett Hall on the MSU campus. BPE may also be performing at various times during NOTSTOCK in the Student Center Beaver Dam. He plans to collaborate with students in select classes and organize a presentation of their work. Gonna be crazy!

NOTSTOCK will be featuring a special capstone concert with Twin Cities’ sensation, Martin Dosh. Martin Dosh is an experimental percussionist and multi-instrumentalist who has toured worldwide as a solo act and extensively with Andrew Bird. His solo shows are outstanding! Dosh will perform in Aleshire Theatre Friday, October 8th at 8:00 p.m., opening band to be announced. Dosh will also conduct a workshop with students and community musicians on Saturday, October 9th at 1:00 p.m. in the MSU Beaver Dam in the Student Center.

Minot State University will be hosting five nationally-known rock poster artists at NOTSTOCK 2009: Miss AmyJo, Tooth, Bjorn Christianson (screen printer extraordinaire), Jeff Johnson and Art Chantry. All of the artists are widely published and create work for the most popular alternative bands. On October 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, from 11:00am thru 6:00pm the artists will be screen printing live all day in the Student Center Beaver Dam. Students and guests will be assisting in the production of posters, editions, and a special screening of skateboard decks. In addition, there will be a presentation by Jeff Johnson, Minneapolis award winning artist, designer and founder of SPUNK DESIGN MACHINE at 7:00pm on Wednesday evening in the Student Union Conference Center and a presentation by ART CHANTRY, a pioneer and pillar in poster design and graphic design,at 7:00pm on Thursday night in the Student Union Conference Center. All of the events are free and open to the public. The artists will have posters for sale and will be available to sign other collected works. Live music from local bands will accompany the artists. Fargo native Matt Mastrud is a graphic designer and artist whose work has been seen around the country. His clients have included Microsoft, the NDSU Athletic Department, the University of Northern Iowa, the rock band Drive-By Truckers, as well as many illustrations and gig posters for many musicians. Matt’s work has been published in The Art of Modern Rock, Rockin’ Down the Highway, and The Art of Electric Frankenstein. He is a founding member of the regional Squad 19 Design Collective and the Back Alley Gallery in St. Paul. FLATSTOCK: A poster show series that is presented by the American Poster Institute (API). It is an ongoing series of exhibitions featuring the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today. The FLATSTOCK shows provide the general public with an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who've created it -- they provide the API with a way to present the poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of individual styles they represent.
